Description
Summary:Profitability of upland rice cropping in the Western savanna area of Ivory Coast. The objective of the two years upland rice experiment on eroded, leached savanna oxisols was to select the most efficient cropping sequence for economical production, with both manual and mechanized techniques. Fertilization and variety are the main determining factors. At the opposite, soil Village below 10 cm depth is not useful, if weeds are well controlled. The return is very negative for extensive cropping, slightly negative for intensive cropping with available varieties, and strongly positive with a new highyield variety, IRAT 216 (= IDSA 6) (3350 kg/ha in 1988). Under present conditions, only the above variety could lead to an economically increased production of upland rice. Manual cropping results in a production cost per kg not very different from that obtained through mechanized techniques one.
