The return is very negative for extensive cropping, slightly negative for intensive cropping with available varieties, and strongly positive with a new highyield variety, IRAT 216 (= IDSA 6) (3350 kg/ha in 1988). Under present conditions, only the above variety could lead to an economically increased production of upland rice.
