Summary:<p/> <p>We establish a criterion for the global exponential stability of the zero solution of the scalar retarded functional differential equation <inline-formula><graphic file="1029-242X-2006-37195-i1.gif"/></inline-formula> whose linear part <inline-formula><graphic file="1029-242X-2006-37195-i2.gif"/></inline-formula> generates a monotone semiflow on the phase space <inline-formula><graphic file="1029-242X-2006-37195-i3.gif"/></inline-formula> with respect to the exponential ordering, and the nonlinearity <inline-formula><graphic file="1029-242X-2006-37195-i4.gif"/></inline-formula> has at most linear growth.</p>
