Description
Summary:The medieval hagiographic sources are works inspired in the cult of the saints and destined to keeping the memory of those men and women alive within a community. Therefore for the hagiographer does not constitute a primordial consideration the chronological narration of one life, as the narrative is not undertaken only to inform, but also and especially to provide spiritual edification. In sorth, the narrative sources receives the name of hagiographic "legend". Nevertheless, the vita of a saint is not only the narrative of the life of a saintly individual: it must also be an exemplum for the others to follow. It may therefore be said that the saint pertains as much to history for the human condition, as to metahistory for his or her paricipation in the divine. In this way, the real physiognomy of these characters, their individuality, disapperars behind an ideal that is the personification of an abstraction: the sanctity.
