Global ice load assessment as inverse problem of external forces in naval structural mechanics

Object and purpose of research. This paper studies global ice loads acting on the hull of the ship moving in ice. The purpose of the study is to classify the ice loads acting on the hull in terms of naval structural mechanics, as well as to develop the determination procedure for global ice load duri...

Chernov0Arctic and Antarctic Research InstituteObject and purpose of research. This paper studies global ice loads acting on the hull of the ship moving in ice. The purpose of the study is to classify the ice loads acting on the hull in terms of naval structural mechanics, as well as to develop the determination procedure for global ice load during ship interaction with the ridge. Subject matter and methods. The paper is based on the full-scale test data for icebreakers and on FEM-based calculation procedures. Main results. The paper suggests the classification of the ice loads acting on the hull of the ship moving in ice. The case study of the global ice load assessment procedure for ship interaction with a ridge illustrates the approach to solving the inverse problem of naval structural mechanics, i.e. assessment of the external load based on the known structural responses. Conclusion.Determination of the global ice load can be regarded as the inverse problem of naval structural mechanics and ship theory, i.e. determination of the force variation law based on the known responses. Determination of the actual ice load parameters shall be distinguished from the assignment of design loads. It shall be taken into account that ice loads are temporary and vary during their action. The latter circumstance provides the prerequisites for investigating ice load problems in the probabilistic formulation.http://transactions-ksrc.ru/eng/archive/Global-ice-load-assessment-as-inverse-problem-of-external-forces-in-naval-structural-mechanics/structural mechanicsclassification of loadsexternal loadsice loadsinverse problem of the structural mechanics
