Description
Summary:Taking a longitudinal approach, this article makes an assessment of the "Mapuche question" in early 21th century Chile – particularly in the context of the celebration of the Bicentenary of independence which led to the emergence of new identity dilemmas (ou claims). It emphasizes the fundamental tension between the advanced modernity boasted by Chilean elites and the dynamics of expression of Mapuche’s own identity, as well as the various ways in which the identity of the Indian part of Chile is repressed.
