Summary: | Women's sport in Spain began within a framework that was clearly limiting for women. However, doing physical exercise and the possibility of competing opened up an area in which the stereotype, which was often untrue to reality, began to weaken. This paper wishes to show the perception of femininity in what was traditionally considered a men's world, at a time, the first half of the twentieth century, when the limits on said practices were at their weightiest. In this way, women's sport can not only make us understand the role of women in society then and people’s perception of this role, but also, in contrast or opposition, the role of men. It will also show the paradoxes of a society which, on the one hand imposed limits, but on the other encouraged women's sport in imitation of what was happening abroad. Finally, examples of some of these paradoxes will be given based on the figure of Lili Alvarez. |
