Summary:This paper aims to present an application capable of detecting the road traffic load in urban areas using an infrastructure of video cameras in conjunction with a well known programming language: Lab View. The presentation will highlight the role played by video detection technology, what advantages it offers and some examples of its successful use in the area of public transports. Developments in recent years clearly show that video systems certainly can, and will, establish themselves in the market. Also, an important aspect of the application consist of the advantage that it can determine the degree of occupation of a traffic link at certain hours, but it also can realize a traffic optimization by interconnecting this application with a traffic light adaptive, control system.
