Description
Summary:Under cover of the collection of customs duties there were individuals who, through their position in the Administration, embezzled large amounts of money which became the foundation of their wealth and the basis for their social advancement. These pages seek to throw light on the lucrative business that grew up around the smuggling of goods during the 18th century by the persons responsible for its prosecution, like Minister López de Lerena, and to examine the debates provoked by these practices in Spain in the Age of Enlightenment.
