Summary: | Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease transmitted by ticks. The diagnostic approach depends on the form of disease, but clinical diagnosis continues to be preferred among others. The method of choice among laboratory tests is to determine serum antibodies. The causative agent of disease is sensitive to several classes of antibiotics; their choice and dose is based on the syndrome of disease. After the illness, patients may have non-specific symptoms in which additional antibiotic therapy is not recommended. Authors of the following guidelines do not recommend testing ticks for Borrelia burgdorferi after a bite. Prophylactic antibiotic therapy is recommended for children and adults for the first 72 hours only in case of a high risk of infection. Adherence to simple personal protection rules, the use of repellents and timely inspection will prevent the development of infection. |
