Description
Summary:The present paper aims at proposing a reflection on the sociological research methods after considering some peculiarities of the Brazilian field. The author underlines that the variety of social contexts in the country as well as the high class inequalities make the field work more difficult than it may be presumed considering the researchers ‘acceptance by the population. At the same time, sociological research on Brazil is hindered threefold: by the diffusion of some ideas based on the national culturalist studies, by the assumption that sociology should analyze major social problems and by the priority given to international debates. In this context, the author argues for developing participant observation methods which should overcome the actual dominance of statistical analysis and interviewing methods.
