Elements, that create value in the knowledge production/transfer are the actors that take parts in the links of ‘information chain’. These actors are ‘authors/researchers/scientists’ and consequently their products as information resources, ‘publishers’/database producers, ‘distributors’/intermediary organizations and ‘information retrieval systems’ which include libraries and other information centers, databases and search engines. The aim of this study is to examine analytically the information retrieval (IR) process, IR systems that give life to this process and the position of library institution and other information centers as types of IR systems, in the context of ‘information chain’ concept which defines both the actors and their functions in the process of knowledge production/transfer. Bilgi üretimi sürecinde değer yaratan unsurlar, enformasyon zincirinin halkalarında rol alan aktörler, yazarlar/araştırıcılar/bilim insanları ve dolayısıyla ürettikleri bilgi kaynakları, yayınevleri/veritabanı üreticileri, dağıtıcı kuruluşlar/aracı kuruluşlar ve bilgi merkezleri, veritabanları, tarama motorlarını içeren bilgi erişim sistemleridir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, bilgi üretimi sürecinde rol alan aktörleri ve işlevlerini tanımlayan “enformasyon zinciri” kavramı bağlamında bilgi erişim süreci, süreci yaşatan bilgi erişim sistemleri ve bilgi erişim sistemi türü olan kütüphane kurumu ve diğer bilgi merkezleri’nin yerini analitik çözümleme yoluyla irdelemektir.
