Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMA Negeri 2 Watampone. Populasi adalah siswa kelas 3 (tiga) IPA Semester Ganjil Tahun Ajaran 2008/2009. Sampel diambil melalui teknik random sampling dengan desain penelitian <em>one group </em><em>pretest-posttest</em>. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) kegiatan siswa selama proses belajar mengajar efektif, (2) keterampilan guru dalam mengelola pelajaran tergolong dalam kategori baik, (3) tanggapan siswa terhadap pelajaran positif , dan (4) hasil belajar siswa telah mencapai kelengkapan pembelajaran. Analisis statistik inferensial menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara pretest dan posttest dalam pembelajaran kooperatif tipe NHT untuk materi matriks. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran kooperatif tipe NHT efektif diterapkan pada Mata Pelajaran Matematika materi Matriks terhadap siswa kelas 3 (tiga) IPA di SMA Negeri 2 Watampone.</p><p>Kata kunci: Pembelajaran Kooperatif Tipe NHT, eksperimen, matrix, pretest-posttest.</p><p align="center"><strong> </strong></p><p align="center"><strong>ABSTRA</strong><strong>CT</strong></p><em></em><em>This study is a quasi-experiment research which aims at investigating the effectiveness of cooperative learning of NHT type in Mathematics subject of matrix lesson which focuses on four aspects (1)  students’ activities, (2)  teacher’s     skill in managing the lesson, (3) students’ response, and (4) students’ learning result, and the significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Watampone. The population was the third-grade students of Science class in the odd semester of academic year 2008/2009. The sample was taken through random sampling technique with one group pretest-posttest research design. The study results showed that (1) the students’ activities during the teaching-learning process were effective, (2) the teachers’ skill in managing the lesson was classified in good category, (3) the students’ response toward the lesson were positive, and (4) the students’ learning results have achieved the learning completeness. Inferential statistics analysis showed that there is significant difference between the pretest and posttest in cooperative learning of NHT type for the matrix material. Based on the study result it was concluded that the cooperative learning of NHT type is effective to be applied in mathematics subject of matrix material to the third-grade students of science class at SMA Negeri 2 Watampone.</em><em></em> Keywords: <em>Cooperative learning of NHT type, experiment, matrix, pretest-posttest.</em>
