Summary: | the article analyzes the main trends, controversies and motivations that explain the expansion and evaluation of Higher Technology Courses (CSTs), considering, on the one hand, the flexibility pointed out by the Law of Guidelines and Bases - LDB nº 9.394 / 96 and, on the other, the policy defined for Brazilian higher education, between 2003 and 2018. The discussion uses the literature on the subject and the data produced by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira on the expansion, evaluation, enrollment and graduates of CSTs, in the period. The text analyzes the insertion of these courses in the Reform of Professional and Technological Education that occurred in Brazil, in the 1990s, and of the policies formulated for the sector. It also examines the relationship between the increase in its offer and the quality of the training of students who seek them, highlighting the areas of knowledge of greater expression in the process.
