Summary: | In Paraná, 2,800 cases of meningitis are reported annually. This study aimed to: describe the epidemiological profile ofthe meningitis cases notified and confirmed in the municipality of Ponta Grossa – Parana State/Brazil and to analyze the mortality rateof this disease per year, between 2001 and 2005. The epidemiological data were collected from Sinan database at the 3rd Paraná StateHealth Regional. The variables selected were sex, age, race/skin color, prior-existent illnesses, meningitis type, evolution of the case andsequels. Among 401 notified cases, there was a predominance of males, children under 9 years of age, white race, absence of prior-existent illnesses and sequels. Viral etiology was the most frequent, with the mortality rate ranging from 5.39% to 17.24%. Meningitismonitoring is indispensable in order to subsidize the adoption of control measures, fast diagnosis, and early treatment. |
