Summary:The article is devoted to the phenomenon of abbreviation in the modern French language. It was given worldwide distribution as the way of making new words by reduction. The main task of this paper is to define general characteristic of abbreviation for making them easy to understand and use. In this article the phenomenon of abbreviation is analyzed, some characteristics of making reduced words are set up, the typology of abbreviations is defined, and initial words are classified. The most valuable in the article is the comparative analyses of the abbreviations in French and Ukrainian. The author insists that the intensive usage of different reductions is one of the important features in the development of national and international terminological systems and languages in general.
