Summary:This article discusses the economic, social and political role of alcoholism in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the period of 1880 to 1920. It examines the discourses of criminologists and different Justice and Police authorities about alcoholism in those years and suggests to look at the alcoholic as an agent who instead of industrial and rural labour, choose the pub, rejecting hirarchical and disciplinary rules of world labour.
