La Habana.Instituto Nacional de Higiene, Epidemiología y Microbiología. La Habana.Instituto Nacional de Higiene, Epidemiología y Microbiología. La Habana. The theory of social representations has achieved a great value in Public Health research, since they influence actions and responses of the human beings, at the individual and social level. There are many studies, which link social representations with diseases or other health conditions, however it has been proved that the information sanitary personnel have about the view of hypertensive patients about it is not enough. Statistics reveal that 30, 9 % of the cuban populations suffer from high blood pressure so it is a risk factor, which requires medical care. Such antecedents show the need of qualitative studies to approach the adequate criteria, knowledge or perceptions of the hypertensive patient about the diseases for their self-care. With this article, it is intended to present a review of the Cuban studies regarding social representations in health, mainly about arterial hypertension.http://www.revfinlay.sld.cu/index.php/finlay/article/view/591hipertensiónautocuidadoconocimientos, actitudespráctica en salud
