Summary:The goal of the current study was to investigate the social work and the non - social work students’perception toward the poor and the poverty. The study uses quantitative method based on Attitude Toward Povertyand Poor Peoples (ATP) scale developed by Yun and Weaver (2010) and Athernon, Gemmel, Haagenstad & Holt (1993). The sample were composed of 180 students in Ho Chi Minh City Open University including 86 social work students and 94 non-social work students. The findings of this study highlighted both causes of poverty - individualistic and structural causes of poverty. The results may help develop social work education in the Ho Chi Minh City Open University
