Description
Summary:Since 1986, when Steinberg and Silverberg coined the term “emotional autonomy” to describe the affective disengagement of the adolescent from his or her parents, a considerable number of studies have appeared on the subject. Despite this, the literature reviews show that there is no research which considers the effect of fathering. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between fathering and emotional autonomy. The population is taken from students of the public high school of Baharestan, Tehran. The total numbers of the participants are 414 which were selected by the random cluster sampling method. Fathering was measured using the Fatherhood Scale (Dick, 2004). Emotional autonomy was measured using Emotional Autonomy Scale (Steinberg & Silverberg, 1986). We use the SPSS 18 and STATGRAPHICS 5.1 to conduct a canonical correlation analysis. Results from the canonical correlation model revealed that there is one significant set between fathering and emotional autonomy. According to the first set, Negative parental engagement, Positive paternal emotional responsiveness, and the moral father role support shared 0/36 of the variance with individualism and de idealization. This result can be explained through Lacan Theory.
