This paper deals with the problems inherent in the semantic description of grammatical words from the point of view of Lexical Semantics and (Meta)lexicography. The aims of this paper are: (1) To demonstrate that an opposition between “meaningful” and “meaningless expressions” stricto sensu does not hold, and to evaluate its consequences for the selection of the metalanguage that should be used to write the explanatory paraphrases; (2) to draw a general panorama of explanatory mechanisms that dictionary makers use to explain grammatical words in semasiological dictionaries; and (3) to present a proposal of a metalexicographic model for semantic description of grammatical words.
