The present earthquake experience, written in the form of a diary by two emergency psychologists, highlights how writing may represent a means to “pour out” emotions and reprocess them by giving them meaning. Writing a diary during an emergency means taking the time to understand what is happening inside and outside oneself, to reach awareness and be of help. When not externalized, emotions risk eventually exploding or imploding, according to the specific case. This diary narration shows how giving voice to one’s and others’ “feeling”, by acknowledging critical points and strengths as well as connecting people and resources, may be a useful tool among others to generate initiatives that may gradually lead to a rebirth from catastrophic situations.
