Several researchers have tried to describe the term, that has already been mistaken with others such as self-instruction, learning independence and self-directed learning, among others. Other researches seek to outline the path to be followed to reach the autonomy in learning both by students and teachers. Defining the importance of motivating students of English as a second language and how to do it also plays a role of great importance in research in general.
