Fernandes0Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras pela Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná (UNIOESTE) Learning autonomy is an issue that has fed research and discussions in the field of the learning and the teaching of foreign languages, specially the English Language. Several researchers have tried to describe the term, that has already been mistaken with others such as self-instruction, learning independence and self-directed learning, among others. Other researches seek to outline the path to be followed to reach the autonomy in learning both by students and teachers. Defining the importance of motivating students of English as a second language and how to do it also plays a role of great importance in research in general. The present study aims at gathering and analyzing this information in a concise way through extensive reading and bibliographical analysis to understand if the autonomy is really possible, how efficient it can be and how to achieve it, outlining, moreover, the fundamental roles of students and teachers in the learning process of the language. https://www.revistas.ufg.br/lep/article/view/35044/18682Learner autonomySecond language acquisitionTeacher and learner roles
