This study aims to analyze the consequences of the settlement and growth of gated communities in the metropolitan areas of Latin American cities. Previous studies on the phenomenon of gated communities have interpreted the appeal of this residential model as a choice of residents looking for safety, social homogeneity, public services and facilities of quality, etc. Inspired by the lectures on gentrification, this study brings an original perspective, since such proliferation cannot be explained using only the addition of individual decisions and wishes. Considering the gated communities phenomenon as a joint articulation of the interests of three actors : real estate developers, residents and the local State, we explore new forms of urban segregation stemming from the unequal accessibility to urban resources.
