Summary:<p><strong>Background</strong>: mandibular fractures are the most frequent breaks in facial traumatology, being the cause of numerous visits to the emergency services. These fractures are associated with loss of function, aesthetics and high cost of treatment.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Objective</strong>: to characterize patients with traumatic mandibular fractures treated at the "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna" General Teaching Hospital of Las Tunas, from June 2016 to April 2018.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Methods</strong>: a descriptive, longitudinal, retrospective study was carried out at the department of maxillofacial surgery of the aforementioned hospital and during the time herein declared. The sample consisted of 56 patients with a radiographically confirmed clinical diagnosis of traumatic mandibular fracture. The information was gathered from the medical interview, the physical examination and the medical history. The results were analyzed according to descriptive statistics.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Results</strong>: male patients predominated; those in the 20 to 29 age group (44,6 %), followed by the 30 to 39 age group (30,4 %). The most frequent etiology was physical aggression. The most common clinical manifestations were localized pain, mandibular deviation and changes in occlusion. Most of the injuries were simple fractures and required surgical treatment. The most frequent complication was infection.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: patients with traumatic mandibular fractures treated at the Las Tunas provincial hospital during the study period were characterized.<strong></strong></p>
