THE OUTCOMES OF IDIOPATHIC MACULAR HOLE SURGERY

Purpose. To analyze the results of idiopathic macular hole (IMH) surgeries (anatomical closure serve as a criterion) in 2007-2012. Material and methods. We analyzed the results of IMH surgeries performed by two surgeons between 2007 and 2009 (53 patients, 54 eyes) and 2010-2012 (56 patients, 62 eyes...

Material and methods. We analyzed the results of IMH surgeries performed by two surgeons between 2007 and 2009 (53 patients, 54 eyes) and 2010-2012 (56 patients, 62 eyes). All patients followed up after surgeries were included. Results. The anatomical closure of IMH was achieved in 74.1% of cases in 2007-2009 and in 93.5% of cases 2010-2012. To exclude the influence of differences in diameters of IMH we used the method of standardization to calculate the expected proportions of positive outcomes of surgeries. In a “standard” group stratified according to the size of IMH, the outcomes of the surgery in 2010-12 were almost 14% better than in 2007-2009 (P<0.01). Conclusion. The outcomes of IMH surgeries in 2010-2012 significantly improved as compared to 2007-2009. Possible reasons for that improvement were transition to 25/27G technologies, a wider area of internal limiting membrane peeling and implementation of techniques providing for the peeling to be the most complete.https://www.ophthalmosurgery.ru/jour/article/view/150idiopathic macular holeoutcome of surgeryoptical coherence tomographymethod of standardization
