Description
Summary:The purpose of this systematic literature review was to find studies documenting the effect of physiotherapy on children with congenital muscular torticollis from birth up to two years of age. Different medical databases were searched for information covering the time period 1984 to Mai 1999. Experts in the field were consulted and reference lists were reviewed for further information. Four clinical effect studies, one prospective and three retrospective follow-up studies were found. Physiotherapy treatment consisted of active stimulation, passiv stretching and instructing the parents. The studies showed that, 70 to 100 prosent of the cases had good to exellent effect of physiotherapy, provided that the treatment was started within the first year of life. The studies did not evaluate the different therapeutical methods separately, or focus on whether the children needed different types or dosage of treatment according to the severity of their condition. The internal validity of the studies was not of sufficient quality with regard to precision and reliability. There is therefore a need for additional research.
