A Retrospective Assessment of Individuals Infected with HIV

In this study, 46 HIV positive patients followed by our clinic since 1997 were evaluated. Thirty three of the patients were male and the mean age was 33.7 ± 9.24 years. The most common route of infection was determined as heterosexual intercourse (78.3%). Thirty-one (67.3%) of the patients were diagnosed at our clinic. Six-teen (35%) of the patients had follow up problems. Twenty (43%) patients presented with opportunistic infections, and 30 of all patients developed at least one opportunistic infections. The most frequently isolated microorganism was Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and it was followed by Candida species (n= 9). One patient was infected with hepatitis B and five were with hepatitis C. One patient was diagnosed as colon adenocarcinoma, and one as Caposi sarcoma. It was determined that 43% of the patients had irregular antiretroviral treatment (ART). The initial treatment regimen was zidovudine + lamivudine + ritonavir/nevirapine for all of the patients. The obedience problems of HIV positive patients to ART, shows us the need for developing new politics for HIV positive patients’ follow up and management.
