Summary: | This article intends to explore the relationship between Argentinean socialism and the rise of football as a mass spectacle in the nineteen twenties. For this we will analyze the different approaches and postures found mostly in La Vanguardia, the Party´s official newspaper. As part of a more general investigation about the different responses of socialists to mass culture, and the challenges that mass culture posed for the socialist practices, the main hypothesis of this particular work is that in regards to other sports that had also become mass spectacles, and that were characterized as more dangerous for popular culture by socialists, football was seen as an opportunity to assimilate an important aspect of popular entertainment.
