Description
Summary:This article discusses Internet appropriation from visitors of the public access centers run by the government and non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Chile in the first decade of the twenty-first century. On the theoretical level, this study considers the appropriation model from use sociology which highlights social construction of meaning. From a methodological point of view this research relies on a qualitative ethnographic based approach. This article shows the appropriation process complexity and its more specific aspects for the internet in the public access centers in Chile. It also analyzes the local pathways to technology, users’ technical and cognitive skills and uses constructed meanings in relation to their personal, professional and social spheres.
