However, the dominance of scholastics within university faculties made the intrusion of the crown in the upper houses of learning a difficult undertaking. The aim of this study is to analyze these processes from the reform plan drafted in 1767 by Gregorio Mayans y Siscar. We understand that this is situated within a much broader context of reforms in which the tension between old and new is revealed around Spanish universities.
