Summary: | The sociolinguistic situation refl ects the communicative condition and potential of the language/languages within a community, country or region, depending on the socio-political and economic situation recorded in a certain period of time. Political changes, social and economic transformations, geostrategic reorientations infl uence the linguistic policies of the state, aimed at adjusting the communicative resources to the requirements of the society. In the case of the Republic of Moldova, we assist at a series of processes that change the status and the communicative weight of the Romanian language in relation to the Russian language and other languages of ethnic minorities. Excessive politicization of issues related to the offi cial language generates tensions and disturbances at social level, and the state, through its linguistic policies, must take eff ective measures to improve the situation.
