| Summary: | The article analyzes archival fragments of the correspondence between Vladimiras Gadonas (Włodzimierz Gadon) and Simonas Barasa-Borisevičius (Szymon Borysewicz), preserved at the Bibliothèque Polonaise in Paris. The authors are former participants of the Polish–Lithuanian rebellion against the Russian Empire in 1830–1831. Their correspondence was held in 1841 at the time of their emigration in France. The letter of Barasa-Borisevičius, which is published here, is a unique document of the 1830–1831 rebellion memory. It suggests an alternative approach towards representations of the rebellion in the official historiography and collective Lithuanian memory. The article is an attempt to reconstruct the biography of Barasa-Borisevičius, to provide a portrait of the almost unknown and forgotten Samogitian warrior, and to discuss the rebel’s mentality with its social, political and emotional contexts. In addition, the archival traces allow to propose a hypothesis about Barasa-Borisevičius’ contacts with the poet Adomas Mickevičius (Adam Mickiewicz) in emigration. |
