Overall energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission is significant in majority of higher educational institutions due to their large number of buildings. Improving the energy performance of buildings is one of the ways to address this challenge. A strategy for achieving this is proper targeting and monitoring of energy consumptions. The aim of this paper is to review the state of knowledge of energy performance monitoring in the context of higher education institution. It is discusses the concepts underlying current energy performance theories and attempts to identify the need for developing a comprehensive building energy performance information system for higher educational institutions as one of the ways of promoting environmental sustainability in higher educational institutions.
