O objetivo desta pesquisa é identificar a verdadeira visão da modernidade. Esta reflexão se ergue sobre as categorias de moderno e antigo interpenetradas. O que permitiu Benjamin refletir a experiência moderna do século XIX, recorrendo a categoria do fetichismo de mercadoria indispensável para uma análise da sociedade industrial do século XX.
