The lack of instruments validated in the portuguese language to evaluate this construct motivated this study on the translation and cross cultural adaptation of a aging perceptions questionnaireObjectives: to translate and culturally adapt the Aging Perceptions Questionnaire. to the Brazilian Portuguese language. Methods: The methodology applied here was the one proposed by Beaton et al. In the “Recommendations for the Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Health Status Measures” of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Work and Health Institute of Toronto. In this study, all the stages for translation and cross-culturally adaption suggested were performed, that is, two translations to Portuguese (T1 e T2), a synthesis of these two translations (T12), two back translations, a synthesis of these two back translations, an analyses by the specialists committee and the pre test. The validity of the content was performed by the analyses of the committee and the qualitative analyses from the pre test. Results: After applying the pré test and the individual interview on a group of 30 individuals, two corrections were necessaryon the T12 document, that is, the pre test translated version. Conclusion: The APQ is a multidimensional instrument with good psychometric properties to evaluate the self perceptions of aging. The final document built from the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the original instrument Will be applied on a greater sample of individuals from different locations for its validation., providing information about the perceptions of aging in different cultures. === INTRODUÇÃO: A autopercepção do envelhecimento é um constructo que pode influenciar a saúde funcional e psicológica. A escassez de instrumentos validados em língua portuguesa para avaliar este constructo motivou este estudo de tradução e adaptação cultural de uma escala de percepção de envelhecimento. OBJETIVOS: traduzir e adaptar culturalmente para a língua portuguesa brasileira o Aging Perceptions Questionnaire.MÉTODOS: Foi utilizada a metodologia proposta por Beaton et al. nas “Recomendações para Adaptação Cultural de Medidas de Estados de Saúde” da Academia Americana de Cirurgiões Ortopédicos (AAOS) e do Instituto para Trabalho e Saúde de Toronto. Neste trabalho, foram utilizadas todas as etapas para tradução e adaptação cultural sugeridas, a saber, duas traduções para o português (T1 e T2), a síntese destas traduções (T12), duas retrotraduçoes, a síntese destas retrotraduçoes, a análise do comitê de especialistas e o pré-teste. A validade de conteúdo foi feita pela análise do comitê e por análise qualitativa do pré-teste. Resultados: Após a aplicação do pré-teste entrevista individual em 30 indivíduos, foram realizadas duas alterações no documento T12, ou seja, a síntese das traduções aplicadas como pré-teste. CONCLUSÃO: O APQ é um instrumento multidimensional com boas propriedades psicométricas para avaliar a autopercepção do envelhecimento. O documento final gerado a partir da tradução e adaptação cultural do instrumento original será aplicado posteriormente em uma amostra maior e de diferentes locais para sua validação, proporcionando informações sobre a percepção do envelhecimento em diversas culturas.
