In accordance with the economic, social and cultural development that shows competitiveness as its core, this study aimed to answer the following question: How were the social, cultural and economic impacts dealt when Varig Corporation was wound up following the consequent departure from the company of the Brazilian airline industry? Beginning with a general inquiry, written sources were analyzed as well as all relevant documents which may provide new elements for a better comprehension of the facts of nearly eight decades of Varig Corporation history. In oral recordings, we could register and analyze the testimonies, aiming to leave to posterity the names of men and women that participated in its long history, mainly pilots and co-pilots who had to search for new opportunities in different markets, and the retired ones, who depended on Aerus, and lost their dreams of a peaceful aging as Varig stopped operating. === Esta pesquisa, que trata da “Varig: reflexões sobre a ascensão e a queda da empresa símbolo do transporte aéreo nacional”, pretende discutir as transformações sofridas pela empresa ao longo dos anos, seja do ponto de vista legal, através das alterações específicas do setor aéreo, seja na forma pela qual os diversos gestores a conduziram, diante dos novos rumos da economia mundial no período de 1986 a 2006, assim como os efeitos produzidos na expressiva parcela de aeronautas do seu quadro funcional. No contexto do desenvolvimento econômico, social e cultural que traz no seu bojo a competitividade, como pressuposto básico, delineia-se a seguinte questão: Como se processaram os impactos sociais, culturais e econômicos, decorrentes da saída da Varig do cenário da aviação comercial brasileira? A partir de um questionamento geral, buscamos nas fontes escritas, de toda natureza, os registros pertinentes ao assunto que possam fornecer elementos para uma melhor compreensão dos acontecimentos das quase oito décadas de existência da Viação Aérea Riograndense. Nos relatos orais, além de registrar e analisar os depoimentos, o fundamento norteador da escolha desta fonte foi a possibilidade de deixar nominados para a história da empresa, os homens e mulheres que participaram de sua longa trajetória, principalmente, os pilotos e co-pilotos que foram buscar em outros mercados novos postos de trabalho e, ainda os aposentados e dependentes do Aerus que viram ruir o sonho de uma velhice tranqüila, quando a Varig parou de voar.
