Įmonės konkurencingumas bei įvairios jį skatinančios strategijos sulaukia vis didesnio vadybos, ekonomikos teoretikų, tuo pačiu ir verslininkų, už įmonių plėtrą ir strateginį planavimą atsakingų darbuotojų dėmesio. Prekybos liberalizavimo ir globalizacijos procesai padidino vartotojų lūkesčius ir įmonių konkurenciją. Įmonės konkurencingumas yra daugialypis reiškinys, turintis ne vieną apibrėžimą, diskutuojama dėl konkurencingumo didinimą skatinančių veiksnių bei vertinimo rodiklių. Įmonėms, siekiančioms padidinti ir išlaikyti savo konkurencingumą iškyla būtinybė keistis ir prisitaikyti prie naujos aplinkos bei galimybė pasinaudoti sinergijos efektais, teikiamais kooperatinių santykių su kitomis įmonėmis ir susijusiomis partnerinėmis institucijomis. Sėkmingai įmonės veiklai užtikrinti svarbi ne tik jos strategija, turimi resursai, bet ir aplinka, kurioje ji veikia. Valstybės, regioninių ir tarptautinių organizacijų nustatytos taisyklės bei teikiama parama taip pat turi įtakos įmonės galimybėms siekti didesnio pelno, rinkos dalies.
