Sanders is the son of a religious fanatic determined to control the citizens of the small town and manipulate them to do her bidding. Johnny is the leader of the pack, inherently violent and misguided. Andrew, the narrator, is a peacekeeper who finds himself strangely attached to Johnny and all of the wildness he embodies. As a traveling carnival comes to town for the annual Giant's Festival, a girl their age goes missing, and the town becomes restless in searching for the one responsible.
