Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are a material with rubbery elasticity at their designed service temperature. TPEs show lot of physical properties of vulcanized rubber: softness, flexibility and resilience etc. The mechanical properties are achieved by reversible crosslink between molecular chains, such as hydrogen bond, ionic interaction or reversible covalent bonds. Due to the incompatibility, occur phase separation occurs, and the system goes into soft and hard domains. Elevating temperature weakens this kind of interaction, which enables flow of molecular chains. This feature ensures a re-processable material. Hydrogen bond is a kind of supramolecular interaction, which gives a well defined microstructure and enforces the materials. When elevating temperature, hydrogen bond weaken significantly, therefore can be use as a reversible crosslink. Oligo-ß-alanines have similar structure with nylon , which can form well-defined crystalline via hydrogen bonds. In our work, oligo-ß-alanines are made as a supramolecular crosslinker, and grafted on to butyl rubber to make a supramolecular TPE. The ß-sheet arrays are designed to phase separate and crosslink the material physically. Expecting secondary structures are observed in the material in most of cases, and this kind of interaction is relative stable upon 200oC. 2014-09-16 English text University of Akron / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1404831585 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1404831585 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
