The first aim was to establish the presence of longitudinal associations between romantic dissolution and emotional adjustment using a pre/post-dissolution design and a non-dissolution comparison group. It was found that dissolution status predicts self-esteem over the transition to college for students with higher self-esteem at baseline. In addition to establishing more definitive links between romantic dissolution and emotional adjustment, this study examined whether the quality of adolescents’ social networks contributes to variability in post-dissolution adjustment. Despite some evidence that social support from friends predicts changes in pre- and post-dissolution adjustment, it was not overall found to be an important predictor of psychological adjustment for college freshmen.
