Education Recent high school graduates enrolled as freshmen or sophomores at three technical colleges, a major university and at its two-year branch campus, were asked to reveal their own perceptions of their high school teachers' knowledge and attitudes toward technical education by way of a questionnaire. Did students, conscious of peers and status, perceive their former high school teachers as disparaging technical education as a form of career preparation worthy of serious consideration; were teachers perceived as being ignorant of technical education; both; or neither? Using a Likert-type scale, data received from eligible subjects was coded for computerized analyses. Factor analysis was performed and three principal factors were determined and defined in the questionnaire. The three factors were named: The Teacher Perceived (1) as Being Pro-Four-Year College and Anti-Technical College, (2) as a Disparaging Counselor; and (3) as a Poor Exponent of Technical Education. One-way analysis of variance was performed on each of the 42 questionnaire items. A 2 x 5 analysis of variance was performed to test the responses of males and females versus the five colleges on each of the three factors. It was concluded that the students in this study were more similar than different with respect to background and demographic data. The technical college subjects were generally supported by the four-year college subjects in affirming the majority of the questionnaire items. This led to the conclusion that these subjects did perceive their former high school teacher as, e.g., being pro-four-year college; dividing students into those who can learn enough for college and those who cannot; and favoring careers that require four years of college. These subjects generally perceived their former high school teachers as poor career counselors, poor exponents of technical education, and as having much to learn about technical education. 1974 English text Bowling Green State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297702062758 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=bgsu1566297702062758 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
