Psychology Emerging research suggests that perceptions of divine communication are diverse and take many forms. Currently absent from the literature, however, is a measure designed to quantify these perceptions. The aim of the current project, therefore, was to develop and evaluate a scale to assess ways with which people perceive themselves to hear from God and the frequency of these perceptions. Participants in the United States and Canada were recruited using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk online system (N = 747). Responses were factor analyzed using maximum likelihood extraction and direct oblimin rotation. Four factors emerged: a general factor, a text-based factor, a factor representing Pentecostal/Charismatic beliefs, and a factor relating to the arts. Overall, these factors correlated with variables related to religious/spiritual beliefs and experiences, personality, and mental health in the expected directions. The current study represents a first step in quantifying people’s experience of perceived communication from God. 2016-01-26 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1449144565 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1449144565 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
