The aim of this thesis is to share the insights that I have acquired while studying the role of vision in the goal-oriented flight behavior of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta. First, I will give the reader the background necessary to place the subsequent research into sufficient context (Chapter I). I will then discuss a set of experiments I performed in which I have identified a specialized region of the compound eye that is responsible for the detection of wide-field motion (Chapter II). After this, I will introduce a set of experiments that investigate how behavioral context influences the role of wide-field motion during goal-oriented flight (Chapter III). Finally, I will discuss my results and how they can be interpreted in the wider literature (Chapter IV). 2019-01-29 English text Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1543852712345633 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=case1543852712345633 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
