Psychology Interracial Friendship Research has demonstrated the importance of friendship as a developmental component during adolescence. Despite the vast amount of research on friendships in general during childhood and adolescence, little research has focused on interracial friendships. The current study examined both ethnic identity and friendship quality within the context of same gender, high school aged, interracial, friendship dyads. Ethnic identity was conceptualized as both a continuous and status variable. Perceptions of friendship quality were moderate in the current sample. Average ethnic identity and other group orientation were high. The finding from previous research of an age effect on ethnic identity was partially supported. ANOVA’s revealed no significant differences in perceptions of friendship quality between dyads with the same ethnic identity statuses compared to dyads with different ethnic identity statuses. Significant differences between genders on perceived friendship quality were found with girls reporting receiving more help than boys. 2008 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1227628534 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1227628534 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
