Some of these similarities include Theory of Mind (ToM) and social functioning deficits. The current study assessed the associations between schizotypy, ToM, social functioning, cognitive ability and emotional distress. It was hypothesized that ToM would partially mediate the relationship between schizotypy and social functioning, beyond the effects of cognitive ability and emotional distress. Level of schizotypal characteristics was negatively associated with social functioning. ToM was not associated with either schizotypy or social functioning. Exploratory analyses were conducted assessing the associations between schizotypy, emotional distress and social functioning. Results indicate that emotional distress partially mediated the relationship between schizotypy and social functioning. The data suggest that emotional distress is a more important component than ToM when looking at social functioning in schizotypy. The data also suggest that emotional distress may be a natural part of schizotypy. 2009-09-24 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1253744370 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1253744370 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
