Unlike spoken languages, the configuration of American Sign Language as a visual and spatial language allows for native users to have a unique view of their surroundings. Space takes on meaning in American Sign Language that it does not in the use of verbal communication. Personal space becomes linguistic space for the expression of thoughts and ideas. Because of the importance of personal space to users of American Sign Language, the space around the body will be maximized in a way different from users of spoken languages. The need to visually see one another’s personal space has an impact on how the American Deaf situate not only themselves in social gatherings, but their surroundings as well. Environments that are created during conversations in American Sign Language reflect the cultural and linguistic attitudes of the American Deaf community. Through the method of participant observation, the use of space was analyzed between Deaf and Hearing groups for the purpose of gaining greater understanding of the perception of space and human experience among users of American Sign Language. 2010-07-15 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1279060612 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1279060612 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
