The current study aimed to determine the differences in confabulation between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls and investigate the cognitive, linguistic, and psychopathological correlates of schizophrenic confabulations. It also aimed to evaluate existing theories of confabulation based on evidence from schizophrenia.Schizophrenia patients (n = 67) and healthy control participants (n = 23) were shown a video and tested on their memory for the story over a period of 8 weeks. Memory, executive functions, source monitoring, verbal fluency, communication disturbance, and severity of positive and negative symptoms were also evaluated during the same period. Schizophrenia patients generated significantly more confabulations than healthy control participants. They had a greater tendency to generate confabulations that are related to each other in some causal/temporal manner and to generate confabulations even when there was no suggestive questioning involved. They also failed to recollect previously generated confabulations. Schizophrenia patients generated confabulations that were further removed from the original story than healthy controls, and their confabulations were associated with confusing the order of given information and with formal thought disorder. They were also positively associated with the presence of hallucinations and negatively with delusions. 2014-10-27 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1413301224 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1413301224 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
