For over seventy years Nash kept a journal documenting historical events, births, marriages, and deaths in Geauga County Ohio. Trained in childhood as a layer of the dead, Nash spent decades preparing bodies for burial. Her journal describes mourning behavior and customs associated with the Age of the Beautiful Death and the religious movement called the Second Great Awakening. Nash's voluminous journal contains important information on both mourning behavior and historical events such as the Civil War and assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and later, James A. Garfield. She documented and described the deceased, providing death notices and vital information even before the county kept accurate records. Nash's occupation demonstrates the valuable role preformed by women in the community. She worked as a professional layer of the dead long before the occupation was dominated by a male undertaking business. Her journal spans the entire nineteenth century illuminating the role of women in early Ohio, mourning behavior, and funerary rites of the era. 2015-07-23 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1435588386 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1435588386 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
