Yet, the impact of stigma on mental health for this population is understudied relative to other stigmatized populations. Using data from Project STRIDE (N=396), I tested hypotheses derived from stress process theory and stigma theory to address this topic. Findings show some support for stress process theory and stigma theory in that those with greater instances of internalized sexual stigma report lower self-esteem and higher depressive symptoms. However, contrary to my hypothesis, social support was not associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms among this population. Despite this unexpected finding, the results of this study suggest that the stress process and stigma theories are useful for understanding the relationship between social stress and mental health among LGB individuals. 2018-06-25 English text Kent State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1528550901560843 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=kent1528550901560843 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
